PAYE & Form 11

For someone whose income is taxed through the PAYE system, but who requires to submit tax returns for a small amount of additional unearned income (ie rental income) is it necessary to fill out a Form 11, or should one just document the tax due, and submit?

Anyone in a similar position who has done this, appreciate the advice.

Having done some research on this, it turns out that someone whose income is primarily taxed through the PAYE system, and who has some additional income to declare, should fill in and return a revenue FORM 12. (Similar to Form 11, a bit shorter).

Found myself in that situation this year and went into the tax office where I had to fill in a Form 11 (with help from the tax guys). No mention of the from 12

My thoughts exactly! But frustrating that the revenue themselves advised gearoidmm to fill in form 11, when form 12 seems to fit the bill perfectly. By my experience, this is far from the first time the revenue has given out wrong advice.

Am I right in thinking that once I use ROS that I don't have to fill in either of the above forms as well?

In fact there is no Form 12 on ROS! In any event there is very little difference between a Form 11 and Form 12. I think the Form 11 on ROS was designed to incorporate the Form 12.

What I meant was, can I simply claim medical expenses as part of the online return........then do nothing else as long as I keep receipts on file? I've never claimed medical expenses before, just filed the usual sole trader returns, so I'm not really sure of the procedure.

Yes. If you use ROS and fill in the electronic Form 11 you can indeed claim credit for medical expenses and any other credits else you are entitled to. It's just an electronic version of the printed form and there is even an electronic worksheet for entering the medical expenses.

To be honest I don't know what the difference is between forms 11 and 12 but AFAIK the Form 11 captures every conceivable income and expense item. I would recommend that you download the ROS offline application and use the offline as oppoosed to the online version of the form as it allows you to save various copies of your return, try out different scenarios etc.

Can't comment on ROS as I am registered for PAYE online only, however I did speak with a revenue official today who shed some further light on this for me. Apparently:

A Form 11 is for people who a fully self-assessed, or who wish to move into that category. People who are currently PAYE, and whose net taxable additional income is more than €3,1xx (missed the fine detail, but the three thousand one hundred bit is right), must return a Form 11.

A Form 12 is for people who are primarily PAYE, and whose net taxable additional income is less than €3,1xx This offical also informed that I can make a note with my Form 12 to the effect that I would prefer to make any payment, or take any refund through the tax credit system. This I am going to do.
