Hi folks ,
can anyone shed any light on this.
Just got a refund for tax year 2003, which was less than we'd hoped.
We are assessed jointly, we get the married credit and we get the Home Carers Credit as my wife stays at home with the kids, but she also earned about 2K in a part time job, where emergency PAYE tax (about EUR800) was deducted.

We both paid PAYE, but revenue have given PAYE credit of 800, are we entitled to 2 PAYE credits (2 x 800 = 1600) ??
TIA, pacman

Can you get the home carers credit and PAYE credit at the same time? If she was on emergency tax then presumably she was not PAYE so that might explain why she did not get the PAYE credit? In case it's of any relevant the PAYE credit is [broken link removed] between spouses. How do the figures compare to those generated by [broken link removed] (might not deal with home carer's credit)?

If she was on emergency tax then her employer must have been operating paye on her wages. You can qualify for the full home carers credit if your income, including paye income is under approx 5k (think €5,080 is the exact figure) and get a portion of the HCC if income is under 6.6k Approx.

OK - I mistakenly thought emergency tax meant that one was not actually PAYE.

Thanks joe & clubman,
But I'm still not clear.
Can you get the home carers credit and PAYE credit at the same time?
Is there some threshold ? maybe something like : you have to earn x euro in income (taxed via PAYE) b4 you are entitled to the PAYE credit ? Maybe revenue made a mistake ;)
Anyone else got a view ?

Most employees (apart from certain directors) get the paye credit. If the wages for the year are under 5k you will also qualify for the home carers credit, provided the other criteria are met (being on joint assessment, having dependants etc.

P60 would have issued to employee for year end, this would proof enough to get Inspector to give PAYE allowance.

Surely the second PAYE allowance has nothing to do with the carers allowance..............

Just to update you on this one, I wrote a letter to revenue, and we just got an additional refund of EUR406 approx. One line at the bottom of the Balancing statement says "PAYE Credit restricted to EUR2026 x 20% = EUR406". EUR2,026 was what my wife earned that year. Looks fair enough !! Pacman
