Hi all,

My girlfriend has just landed a contract job (part-time editing). She will be self-employed/contractor and has to pay taxes out of the money she gets (i.e self-assessment I think!)

Ok, the problem is she has just finished a full-time contract (under the PAYE system) and hopes to get a new contract (again PAYE) but there will be a gap of 2 months. That is, she will have 1 full-time and 1 part-time job.

How is tax treated in this case?
Does she keep them seperate? (PAYE & self-assessment running side by side)

Thanks in advance

Based on these facts she will be employed and self employed in the same year. The complexity of the case depends on the amount of money involved.

If she is earning more than Eur 5,000 from her free-lance work then she will be in self-assessment and be liable to preliminary tax and all the messy stuff. You may want to check this limit as it is a Revenue published limit. If she is only going to be self employed once then the matter is straight forward - if this will be on-going welcome to the world of self assessment.
