Patio Door Replacement.

I need to have two sets of patio doors replaced. I have been quoted just over €11,000 for wooden doors and just over €12.000 for Aluclad doors. About 5 years ago I was quoted €4500. This price seems very high? I am based in Blackrock, Co. Dublin.

A few questions. Anyone recommend a company that they have used for similar. I read that Aluclad can require maintenance plus the danger of mold building up under the skin. Any thoughts on Aluclad?

In a similar position. Should I pay the extra for triple glazed windows? The double glazed are about €1000 cheaper.

We have a cold house, so I am not sure if getting triple glazed windows is going to make much of a difference if the heat is escaping everywhere else.

Yeah, you might not get value for the extra €1k, but if you do plan on other improvements down the line (improving grants Vs increasing energy costs), then it might pay off in the long run.

why dont you invest less and insulate the attic and walls first. have you a condensing boiler , have you LED lights installed rather than 'bulbs' ?.
Much cheaper first step and 'more bang for your buck'

Windows are very expensive. The absolute key part is to have them installed properly to prevent Thermal Bridging. Irish installers are not well skilled in this aspect unfortunately. For reference, I refer you to AAM contributor 'Micksr'.
 
Just wondering if Grizzly went ahead and replaced the doors? If so why did you replace the doors and did you do anything else with windows, etc?
 
I recently had the following work done just to give an indication of prices.

I had one existing sliding patio door and one large window.

Replaced both with triple glazed pvc french doors.

Cost 5500 supplied and fitted. Builder charged 500 quid to enlarge window opening to full door opening for 2nd door.

6000 all in (other works were completed but this is what the door supply and installation cost)

Aluclad doors were coming in at 15k cheapest.

I’m my opinion the PVC ones much better value for money and definitely worth the extra for triple glazing

This is more a factor with external insulation, ensuring the windows are encased within the insulation and not bridging to the internal block walls.

Not so Leo,t your external insulation qualification is an assertion .

I refer you to the expertise of AAM poster "Micksr" who carrys surveys e.g thermal imaging , to all manner of buildings for a living up and down the breadth of the country, and who I have paid to do a full days survey of my dwelling..

Think about it, a thermal bridge is a conduit through an insulated structure allowing heat to pass from one side to the other.

If you're simply replacing existing windows in a cavity wall, you put the new ones back where the old ones were, in line with the insulation line. If the cavity is bridged, it's a builder you need, not a window fitter.

If it's not a cavity wall you have bigger fish to fry, but the external insulation one is much more critical especially with a lot of fitters taking the easy option of replacing windows into the original position rather than moving them out to become part of the insulated envelope.

PVC are cheaper for sure, personally i cant get over the aesthetics so regardless of how cheap they are they wouldnt be value for money.

Appreciate that. It’s all down to personal preference I guess. Im more about function over style and try to get costs down. My other half however is the polar opposite and often won’t make the same sacrifices I am happy to. We normally have to compromise and to be honest the pvc ones we got installed have pleasantly surprised us both.

Anyway. It was only for price comparison. It suited our budget so that’s what we went for
