Patchy lawn growth advice

I have a small back garden...only about 60m2. The problem I have is that the grass is very lush in patches, but growth in poor everywhere else. I have applied a lawn fertilizer, but this seems to only make the lush patches lusher..if you get my drift. The rest is disappointing. Is there anything (other than fertilizer) that can be applied to even it all out?

Quality topsoil.
gebbel, it sounds like what you have is pockets of subsoil mixed with topsoil making up the top layer of your soil structure.
The good top soil pockets react well to the fertiliser, but the subsoil does not allow the feed to transfer to the grass quite as well, leaving you with a patchy marked lawn.
You have the option of spreading a fresh layer of quality soil on top of your existing lawn, then seeding again, or else you can topdress with thin layers of soil over a few years to try and raise the levels of good soil.
