I am curently trying to make my mind up on further study.

My job has turned pretty dire.It lacks any potential & I am not doing anything remotely interesting.

I am thinking of doing a PHD (not in a technical or scientific subject) to combat the lack of challange in my job.

My background is in accountancy but my work is routine pen pushing.

I could cut back on hours to complete the PHD (It would take 4 years) and work would part finance the course.

Should I do this or just pack in job and find something better.

I think you should get another job first. Keep the old job while looking for a new job. Then consider further education. That's my oponion anyway

I know someone in a similar situation who decided to do a postgrad (so only 1.5 years) and stayed in the same boring (but easy) job. I was amazed at how her attitude changed in the job for that year and a half. She was much happier knowing that she was eventually leaving. She was also happy not to have to deal with learning a new job, dealing with new colleagues etc. while trying to concentrate on study.
