Parking

Hi all,

l live in a terraced house, with on the street parking.

Now the parking spaces are not numbered but l think the right thing would be for everyone to park right in front of their own house.

However, some neighbours are parking in front of mine and claiming it's communual parking as the spaces are not lined or numbered. Would l be wrong to ask them to move their car?

Because if not l would be left with no parking space anytime l return home. What's the appropriate way to go about this?

Have you tried the local council for advice firstly?
Did you buy the house with private onstreet parking?

I would be inclined to believe that on-street parking is available to anyone with a valid tax disk regardless of where they live if it is a public road.

Is the road outside your house a public road or is it in a private managed development?

What is the basis of your belief that you are entitled to a parking space when you return home?

(1) The advert for the house did say onstreet parking

(2) It is not a public road. In fact the space looks like it's reserved for residents

(3) l think it's only fair that you park in front of your own house.

It doesn't quite work that way in Ireland. First come first served. Wait a bit and then park your car in front of theirs - that should fix things or a good punch up between you and your neighbours.

If it is not a public road, you should contact your management company / residents association to see if there a set of rules regarding parking. You may need to suggest that they number spaces if there are other residents with the same concerns that you have.

Houses advertised with on street parking generally mean that it is a public road but that the parking is unregulated/ freely available or that it requires payment but residents would be entitled to a parking disc from the relevant local authority.

Is it a through road or a road in a development? Normally communal parking is just that, residents can choose where to park. You could try getting your solicitor to check what was in the deeds when you bought the property but if the spaces are not numbered then it would suggest it's a first come first served basis I'm afraid.

This is the exact problem that the other residents have. If someone is in their place, they need to use yours or be left with no parking. Add to the mix the number of houses with multiple cars/visitors/outsiders using the available parking and you will never have a situation where "your space" (or at least the space you believe should be available to you) will be left for you.

If someone asked you to move your car as you were in "their space", what would your reply be?
I'm sure none of your neighbours believe the space outside your house is any better than the others, they just didn't have much of a choice.

As others have suggested, look into the option of having assigned/numbered parking. Apart from that, I believe you'll be wasting your time "asking" people not to park there or to move.

I live in a mixed development with 1.8 unallocated spaces for our 4 bed, parking is going to be a problem as they haven't actually sold all of the units yet and there have been numerous proposals doing the rounds as to how to deal with it, the bottom line is that the greedy developers aided by the planners created these estates with unrealistic allowances for cars and there is very little that can be done.
