Painting tiles

Hi -

I am considering painting white tiles in the bathroom and kitchen.

Has anyone any tips on doing this?

I notice that I can spray paint or brush paint them so which is better?
Do I paint the grouting and then repaint the grouting white again?
Partly I am doing this because the grouting in the kitchen has got so dirty that I want to regrout again - any tips on this?

And finally - I had a leak in the kitchen a while ago and as the kitchen is partly floor boarded they had to come up and replaced. The floor guy told me that we would have to let the floor dry before we put down new floor boards but when I asked about the tiles he said that the floor would dry out and not to worry about it. Does everyone agree?

Thanks.

Hi Fiona,

I painted the tiles in my kitchen and bathroom. I bought specialist tile paint. It is easy to do and the results are fine but to be honest, it looks like a temporary job. I lived with it for a couple of months before I completely replaced the old tiles with new ones. If you are looking for a short term solution, then its fine. As for the grouting, you can buy a grout pen and mark over the grout and this brightens it.

Thanks Dana - can I ask, did your tiler do a good job and would you recommend him?

I don't have an answer to this question but do have a tiling question.
I have floor to ceiling tiles all over my bathroom. If i was getting this retiled would they remove the existing tiles or just tile over them?

Hi Fiona,

I am proud to admit I did the tiling myself. I am a complete novice and decided to give it a go anyway. Turned out remarkably well if I may say so. I bought a tile cutter in Woodies and the tile spacers and grout, and said about twenty Hail Mary's and it turned out really well. I got the tiles in tile master, an end of line inoffensive colour in case I made a bags of it. All in all, cheap and very cheerful to boot.

Hey Dana - well, maybe I'll give it a go too. My last DIY attempt came out ok in the end but it has made me weary of thinking I'll get things done in a couple of days!

I might be back onto you for tips!

Hi Fiona,
If it's just a case that the grout is a bit dirty, then you can buy grout pens (Atlantic Home Care definitely have them). You just "paint" over the grout with this pen and it comes up lovely and white!

I tried the grout pen but it didn't do the job very well. The grouting is practically black in places so it tends to show through. To be honest, at this stage I want to change the tiles completely at this stage anyway.

Thanks.
