painting pine wood furniture white any advice please

I've got three pieces of furniture in my son's room they are all various shades of pine if you know what I mean and none of the furniture matches. So I have decided I want to paint every thing white so how do I go about what the best products to use? Do I need to sand first I'm a total novice and don't really know where to start.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Mary, you will need to sand the furniture first but you will also need to get something to put on before you prime or paint it. Not sure what it's called but it will cover the knots in the pine, as if you don't do this the knots will come through after painting. I always get pint in colourtrend (in celbridge) they are very helpful and they will know exactly what the material is called and recommend what to do. (no comnnection with the company, just a customer). Hope this helps

Hi Mary, I done this myself in the past. Sand the furniture, remove handles etc. Prime the wood with white spirits afterwards to remove dust etc. Use a nice soft shade of white in an eggshell/satin matt finish rather than a gloss paint.

Some shades that work well are dulux ivory lace, jasmine white, very soft pastel colours - pale blue as it's for a boys room. Good luck.

I would apply a knotting solution. You'll get this in any paint store. It only takes minutes to dry. It will stop the knots seeping out. Ronseal have a good solution called Colron knotting solution.

It is also worth filling the knots and sanding before painting. This will give you a smoother finish. There's nothing worse than looking at holes in the wood after painting and not being able to do anything about it then.

Use Easy Surface Primer (ESP) first and Colortrend paint by far and away the best for the job (no connection, satisfied customer for 16 years!).

Have done exactly what you describe for a misc. collection of 'pine' furniture and it spruced it up no end.

Was thinking of doing the same as we have two rooms with good quality antique pine furniture which now looks very dull. I was thinking about getting someone to paint it for me, do you think this would work out very expensive ?
