painting over a wood stained banister

Hi guys,
This might sound a bit of a no brainer. I am about to start painting our hall. The banister and front door (and a dado rail) hvae all been painted with a wood stained gloss paint.

Is it ok to paint over this with a satin paint or would I need to sand them before I paint... The thoughts of having to sand the banister scares me!!

New paint will not stick to existing gloss paint. So, i am afraid, you have some sanding to do... Rough sanding to provide grip is enough.

Just did that few montsh ago at home...sanded handrail to bare wood as i wanted it natural color & waxed, and quick sanding to the balusters to provide grip, one coat of primer and 2 coats of satin wood paint.
