hi all,

Just got our new front door delivered. Has to be planed a bit as it's a bit big but the father in law will do that. I had assumed that we should paint the door before hanging it but he says it'd be easier to do once it's up?

A) Is he right?
B) Can you slap the paint right onto the door or should I put some sort of primer on beforehand? Am anxious to get it done asap.

Thanks

M

A... Yes much easier to paint when hanging.

B.... If it's bare wood you need primer, undercoat and probably 2 coats of weatherproof gloss. If you paint gloss onto bare wood it will just soak in.

If painting a hardwood door be sure to use the appropriate primer- probably an aluminium wood primer- otherwise the paint bond could fail. Undercoats contain pigment and fillers which provide the ideal finish to wood prior to applying the final gloss top coat. A gloss coat on its own would have very poor coverage or hiding power.
