Painting Fireplace

Got a great bargain on a solid pine fireplace for new sitting room. However, floors are walnut laminate so not sure if pine will match. Was planning on painting fireplace cream to match kitchen units (it's an apartment so sitting, dining & kitchen one big room). However have been getting mixed advice as to whether this would be a good idea!! Has anyone painted their fireplaces recently and if so can you recommend any good products? Thanks

THere was a post knocking around yesterday reainting wood furniture, could be useful

we painted our pine fire surround black which turned out great. just be sure to seal the knots well if painting cream, as the knots can weep through

Thanks seantheman, what did you use to seal the knots? Also what kind of paint did you use?

Hi Zion,
We are also considering buying a solid pine fireplace. Where did you get yours and how much should we expect to pay?

Thanks,

I made a pine (red deal) fire surround a few years ago which was painted black to match a slate inset; the paint finish looked well but the knots still bled through, despite careful use of shellac knotting solution. This wasn't such a problem with the black finish (adds character!) but would probably be unacceptable with a cream or light colour.

Quick update - fireplace is too big for room anyway so am going to get a smaller one.

There Should Be No Problem Painting It But Just Make Sure You Use Heat Resistant Paint. This Is Available In Good Paint Shops. Let Them Know What Your Painting And They'll Let You Know The Best Brand

Heat "resistant" paint shouldn't really be necessary, as long as any painted timber components are kept a minimum of 10- 12" away from the actual fireplace opening. The surround I've painted was made to suit an 18" fire place (2" wider than standard) and there's never been a problem, despite burning lots of coal and timber.
