Hi wondering if anybody out there could help ?
Serious problem at work I have recently discovered that my employer has been taking too much off my wages each week claiming it was all tax ! I never received a pay slip in all time I've been working there and on asking for one after a bit of hassle I got one. When I got it I was told my tax credits had changed and so my basic wage had gone up. This is not true as I know credits only change once a year and I rang revenue and they also told me they had not changed. So my employer was taking too much off me every week since I started employment and it wasn't going to tax man ? Wat can I do as I have no payslips to back up my claims ? I am owed over 1,000. I also know if I say anything my job is gone ! Has any1 got advice Please ?

You are entitled to a payslip. Even if it's only a handwritten breakdown of your deductions and credits.

Yeah I just got a handwritten one and its only because I was underpaid for an extra days work and it was claimed that the extra money had been taken off for tax. So I asked for a payslip to see exactly how much tax I was paying and thats when my tax credits mysteriously changed ! Would you bother saying anything ?

Perhaps you were paying emergency tax in the beginning? Then things changed when your employer received your certificate of tax credits?

Are you getting a P60 at the end of the year? This should detail all your deductions for the year, and if you have overpaid on your tax (and it has gone to the government, I'm not sure from your post if you are sure of this), then you just claim back the extra tax.

Try ringing up revenue and asking them how much tax you've paid. Go to the revenue.ie website and find out which center you should ring (it depends on what part of the country you live in). If you give them your PPS Number, they should be able to tell you. If they refuse to tell you over the phone for security reasons (which is quite possible), ask them to send out a "tax credit certificate".

The bottom of the cert shows the name of the employer who should know about your credits. If your current employer's name isn't there, then he may not have registered you officially at all. Are you paid cash, cheque or bank lodgement?

If your employer's name is there, but you still think he's withholding some of the tax, try to find out in writing from revenue how much tax you have paid.

If your employer actually has paid the tax, and paid too much, then you will be able to claim it back at the end of the year.

Edit:
You can calculate your PAYE tax due at [broken link removed]. Put in your annual salary and select "monthly take home pay" from the drop down menu at the bottom. If you only started working half way through the year (and had no other job in Ireland), then put in the amount you expect to earn by the end of the year as your "annual salary"
