Are banks (BOI in our case) permitted to give you an overdraft without you actually asking for one? Herself recently got a Laser card and it seems, without her asking, she was granted an overdraft. As far as I remember there's a €15.20 charge for this facility.

I know that it's probably a simple matter of just ringing up and asking them to terminate the overdraft facility but maybe others aren't aware that they have been given an overdraft facility and may well be stung for it. I don't have a Laser card application to hand so I can't see if it's part of the agreement.

Buffer Limit

I can't speak for BOI but I do have an Ulster Bank account.

I have an automatic "buffer limit" of €320 for which I'm not charged, works like an overdraft.

Anything over and above that is charged at the usual rates.

This is on a ufirst account afaik so you're paying 9 euro a month for this facility.

Re: Buffer Limit

Thanks Elcato you're right,

Yeah, it's a UFirst account but the "buffer" limit isn't really what I got the account for. More the discounted mortgage rate & travel insurance.

Each to their own
