Over-ear noise cancelling headphones - where?

My parents are off to Hong Kong & China next month (lucky swines) & my Mum can never sleep on a plane because she is distracted by the underlying noise. Various friends have recommended noise cancelling headphones but I wonder if anybody would have specific experience/recommendations of Over Ear headphone ones only (she wont wear the ear bud types!!)

Generally over the ear ones aren't as good as the ones that go in the ear.

I have the Bose Quiet Comfort headphones. They are very comfortable, and they work very well, but they were expensive.
