I'm interested in outsourcing some of my work from customers abroad, like some of the more tedious web design. I'm just wondering if anyone knows what the data protection laws or requirements are in regard to that sort of thing?

Is your business as its stands registered with Data Protection Commissioner for any purposes? Maybe you are already a data processor and are unaware of what is required?
Why not call the Data Protection Commissioner on an enquiring basis first.
Web design work would generally have no impact on data protection. Web designers would not be processing personal data. If your website takes orders and credit card details or other personal data, then that's a different story.
