I am building a house direct labour, does anyone know about Colour plaster for external walls. Is it good, is it very expensive ect? Also how much is the average cost of a plasterer? I am in Munster. Any replies would be appreciated.

It's called a through-coloured render, comes in good range of colours and is a much nicer finish that painted sand/cement render. Insist on matching coloured plastic beads. Very durarable, but take care that your gutters are functioning prior to application as it will stain from rainwater in the early stages.

As regards price, I cannot help. We do it in London and charge from £35-£50 per metre depending on quantities. I can only imagine what the Rip-Off Republic will charge. Bear in mind also, that only licensed applicators are allowed to supply and apply, but you may be able to find someone you know to avoid going through the entire supply chain. Also bear in mind that it's a slightly different skill to applying a sand and cement render, so I would not let a plasterer who has no previous experience with it near your house.

Have a look online for Weber SBD Monopral render (a one coat cementicious through coloured render). But i'm sure there are various other products and systems out there.

It's worth the hassle. If done correctly, your house will look great!

Have a look at the link below. I could say 10, 20 years, but it depends on weather conditions. You won't however have to worry about annual painting for quite a few years to come.

Tks Toto, I was wondering if anyone knew of the Irish version, We are waiting on a price from one guy at the moment but have been told to expect 15k Labour, then appapenty the plaster comes in bags and is about E7 a bag. Does 15K labour sound like a lot? I dont know, but it looks like it will be our biggest expence?

1. Depends how big your house is. What is total square meterage of rendering needed? Make sure to deduct openings, ie doors and windows.

2. Depends on height. Is your house 1 or 2 or 3 storeys?

3. Depends on number of openings. Are there big areas unobstructed by windows and doors? Two gable ends? The less the obstruction, the less the corner and stop beads required, the less care needed at edges. Plasterers love big unobstructed areas, it means they came be at home in time for tea.

Give me an idea of the layout of your house in relation to 1-3 above and I'll get back to you with a labour only guide price.

As regards sourcing Weber products or equivalents in Ireland, I'm at a loss. Did a quick online search, but nothing came up. But, I am 100% sure that they are available.

EUR 7.00 a bag sounds good (too good really). We pay around £8.00 sterling for one 25kg bag and we buy in pretty large quantities.

Allow around 1 bag per 1 square metre, by the way.
Coloured beads cost around £0.90 per metre.

Have you thought about what detail you will use at base of wall around house? Has you discussed this with you plasterer?

My sister (In CO Cork) got this done 4 years ago - still looks like new. AFAIK about twice price of conventional render. Limited range of colours at that stage - they have a cream yellow, looks v good, not at all garish. Hope this helps.

there are several different types of product available , the most common ive come accross is monocouche and another is sto render. if you ring most plastering subbies they should be able to sort you out, or if you get in contact with thte suppliers they will have a recommended sub contractor list. You should expect to pay at least 50/m2.
A word of warning, these products are very hard to patch so make sure you have all prep work done and have no need to be breaking out new hopes or vents etc

Just to let you know, I have organised for a plasterer to do this Job, so far only the chimney is done and I am very pleased with it, It is a one coat render, it is sprayed on one day and evened off the following day. It only cost E2k more than the normal plaster.

Monocouche Rendering

Hi

I am considering doing a monocuche finish to the house I am going to build but the extra cost of this is pushing us above our budget.

Has anyone used this on their house in recent months? recommend a qualified plasterer to apply it?

Has anyone who used this a few years ago experienced any downsides to it?

Thanks

now airgead i will be upfront and say i am a painter by trade, first off i have seen this done on a few houses and its great for the first few years but,if you have a colour it fades very badly and very quickly,( my neighbour did his house with it and 2 years later its all different shades of yellow)one other very important thing is that nobodys house is not going too get scratched and marked especially during the building process and when your living there.hey dont take my word for it chat too some plasterers. i have and they have said its a waste of time,im sure other posters will give there opinions but just do some reserch first..

Wet dash white plaster

Hi. I am building a garage by direct labour. I have a 40ft by 30ft shed, which is approx 130 sq metres. I want to put a white wet dash plaster finish on it to match my existing house. If anybody could help me with material quantities that I need.

The tonne bags of pre-mixed wet dash are expensive - quoted €170 per bag. Can somebody tell me - How much coverage area will these do, as if I need a number of bags, I'm into big money straight away!

I'm told if I buy all the materials separately and mix it myself, I'd have to wait a few weeks to let the mix sour. Does anybody know the mixing ratio for materials for doing it this way either?
