Hi, need to get orthotics done for shin splints - just wondering if anyone knows any reasonably priced physio's/specialists who do this ?
Thanks,
Col

theres a physio place in Proby Square, Blackrock, Co. Dublin (up past the UCD blackrock campus on the way to Playwright pub), Brendan Greaney is yer mans name.

Wasnt a huge fan of the product but maybe thats just me - felt like I was turning on about 4 surfaces when I played with the product and wasnt v. comfortable, they wore out a bit and I then abandoned them. Made by, would you believe it, "Langer" - a German operation

Where abouts are you based? I went to a podiatrist/chiropodist who works out of either the Charlemont clinic, the Swords plaza, or Navan depending on the day. The name is Maria McCullen - phone (046) 9072333. The consultation was €55.
Be aware that VHI won't pay for the orthotics unless they've been prescribed by a specialist. I don't know about other medical aids, assuming you have one. The going rate for orthotics is in the region of €300.

Hi Colin,

I suspect I may need orthotics aswell for shin splints and knee pain, but it's only a self diagnosis at the moment. Who advised you that you needed them?

Colin, I think it is a podiatrist rather than a physio, that you need, as previous respondants have indicated.

I went to a podiatrist in the Charlemount Clinic for a couple of sessions. There were 3 different podiatrists treated me during those times but they all seemed fairly competant (not being one myself I can't really tell). I think I paid less than €300 but it might cost that by now if you include the consultation fees.

Helen, I had problems with my knee and this was sorted out by a physio. She told me that I had fallen arches which was causing the knee problem so I went to a podiatrist and that has sorted me out (for now anyway).

I have orthotics for plantar fasciitis (by-product of fallen arches) and I paid around 100 for two physio visits and around 200 for the "langer" orthotics. I amn't cured yet I'm afraid. Be aware that your feet/legs should be re assessed every couple of years to make sure they are still the orthotics are right thing for your condition, as weight/fitness changes over time.

I am a sports physio and use over the counter orthotics for a lot of my clients who have shin splints, anterior knee pain, patellar tendinitis. The ones I use have 4o of correction and work for 99% of my clients. I always recommend clients to try these first as they are only Eur35, before going down the route of the moulded ones.

However, it is worth noting that in order to get the shin splints to settle you should probably have your calves worked out with a couple of sessions close together and then use the orthotics to prevent re-occurance. The hard ground at the moment is a killer.
