Options for front door mat as door scraping floor?

Hi, our front door pushes into our hallway and it practically drags off our wooden floor, a few scratches there already from stones getting caught. No mat will fit under it and I fear the only option is to get someone to do a sunken mat for us or perhaps get the door shaved at the bottom. I want to get a runner carpet along the hallway also as it is too noisy and just ruining my floor at the moment keeping it all exposed. So basically, can I get the bottom of the door shaved to accommodate a mat and a carpet runner or will I get a mat sunken into the wooden floor and just have a big rug instead. Would it be expensive to get a mat sunk into floor and if so, roughly how much and who on earth would I ask to do it if I were to go down this route?

You can get the door shaved easily enough by a carpenter - but be aware, if its your front door you probably do not want to shave it as you will be letting in draughts etc...

The problem seems to lie with the height of your wooden floor, you could get a carpenter to have a look at this and perhaps remove some of the underlay in that area or plane down the floor (is it solid wood?). The wood has possibly warped over time at the door (where its experiencing a cold temp compared to the rest of the floor)

Regarding a sunken mat, again its a carpenter you need to cut out the right sized hole in the floor and finish the edges. Be aware with this option that you need to pick a standard sized mat otherwise you may find yourself with a hole that cant be filled with a standard mat size. It wouldnt be terribly expensive, cant see it being more than an afternoons work for a carpenter.

I don't think it has warped as we are only in the house and is was a new build, really want to stay away from the shaved style as our house is airtight. Our floor is semi solid and no bubbles or anything yet.
So what you are saying is, buy the mat and then give it to the carpenter for him to put in the sink hole. Think you may be on to something, thanks for the advice.

Thats when they warp - if the wood wasnt stored properly or laid before it had expanded etc... Its usually in the first few weeks/months that you get these warping issues. I assume it wasnt scraping when the floor was initially laid?
The best way to do it with wood is to leave the wood for the floor in the place where it is to be laid for a few weeks before laying it - then it does its expanding etc...before it goes down (personal experience only - Im not a carpenter) - but if this wasnt done you could be just experiencing normal expansion that happens to be obvious because its at a door that scrapes.

Best thing to do is contact a carpenter, ask for a quote, and ask him what size he usually finds to be standard for a mat. You will have to ensure the mat you choose is not too thin or too thick for the hole, so you will need to know total floor height - wood + underlay etc....

if the door is modern then you might be able to adjust the swing height by using an allen key on a little adjuster on the top of the door. If the builders are still on-site or you know who fitted the doors ask them for advice. It is a very simple adjustment and will solve your door height problems.
