Got my eyes tested couple of months ago and optician sent off the optical benefit thing in fact i think he discounted the amount from my bill assuming it would be accepted. Got letter today saying i need 260 contributions and that I only have 249. I am 25 and was in full time education until 1 week before i turned 22 but I worked part time for most of the time i was in college. Do you get prsi credits for when you are in college and not working?

Credits do not count towards the 260 contribution toptal....they must be paid contributions not credited ones. As you are only 11 short of the total, you should make sure that their records include all PRSI contributions you made since you were 16. Ask them for a record of them and compare them to your job history. Also, contributions paid this year might not be included as they won't be returned to SW by employers until EOY.

Credits only count towards pension or other long term benefits as far as I know.

Not only long-term benefits like pensions but also for Jobseeker's, Illness, Treatment benefits in the governing year (this year the GY is 2006). Where people get confused is that there are usually two conditions regarding qualifying when it comes to PRSI. The first requires X amount of PAID contributions, the second can be PAID AND/OR CREDITED.

Have you worked abroad at all, even while in college?

I managed to get 52 UK stamps counted a few years back to qualify me for the dental & optical.

well i've been paying it all this year (im assuming its still paid on maternity leave when they top up wages) so I'll get confirmation from work. I worked in the UK for 3 months when i was as student
