Hi All
We currently have a kerosene boiler (firebird) for heating and hot water and a 1300l storage tank that will, at current prices, cost E 1290.00 to fill per fill. We go through about 3.5 fills a year. Now the house is heavily insulated (double build regs), zoned etc but we (and employees and clients visit) work from there too so heating is on much longer per day than a normal property, hence the three fills, and is 3400 sq ft.

I'm considering changing to a wood pellet boiler but have no knowledge or experience if this would be more efficient and cheaper to run than a kerosene based system particularly given the soaring cost of oil.

Has anyone made the change and is it better/cheaper.
if it makes any difference, we could facilitate bulk storage of pellets.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Sustainable Energy Ireland have been pushing wood pellet heating systems through their greener homes scheme but a lot of people have had trouble with augurs blocking and general lack of reliability. There are of course excellent systems out there but right now it seems hard to find them. Its also a shame that a lot of the pellets used here are imported. Sort of defeats the purpose of saving the planet etc. Have you looked at the possibility of installing a log gasifier system. SEI are supposed to be including them in their grant scheme and they are very economical once installed.
Google Gasifiers for info.
