my parents have just moved into a new house where the esb and gas meters are outside in boxes so they can be read by the companies. however, they need to open them to get an initital reading to set up their accounts etc, and cant open the boxes, does anyone know how/what tool you could use??
thanks

The box can be opened with a triangular-shaped key - I think they're available in most hardware shops.

They can also be opened with a pointed pair of pliers!

A pliers might work on the ESB cover but it will be hard enuf to do. The keys are usually supplied by either the ESB or the builder. I did see some discussion on AAM a long time back about where to buy further ones but, unfortunately can't find it at the some moment. If you use the search option you might be able to find it. You could also try ringing the [broken link removed] and see if they will supply them.

Bord Gais give [broken link removed] info on meter reading.

Post crossed with delgirl's one.

In the meantime, why not just ask a neighbour/relative. Most few people have a few spare ones lying around!
