Opening a USD account - possible / necessary ?

I'll shortly be selling some USD denominated shares and in turn buying a USD bank draft. My intention was to set up a USD a/c with AIB to facilitate the movement without having to convert in/out of Euro. AIB are now stalling as they say USD accounts are for businesses only. Could I go elsewhere for a USD account or is there an easier way to do this ? (i.e. avoid conversion losses) ?

AIB said the same to me when I set up my US$ account. Ulster Bank set one up for me. Other banks may do it too.

You can try to go to the permanent tsb for the personal USD a/c.

But the different branch of tsb will have different requirements for the usd a/c. I do not why. I talked to the tsb branch in Cork. They said that I must deposit USD 5000 to open a account. Then I went to Limerick to open the usd a/c with only USD 1 deposit.

No annual fee!
For personal use!

I opened this account in 2005. Not sure it is still available or not.

Watersprite - What USD rate did Ulster give you?

PTSB are very good when it comes to non-EUR retail deposits.

PTSB USD rates are here:[broken link removed]. The PTSB USD minimum is 1 USD.

If you are looking for some of highest USD rates check out Anglo Isle of Man.

usd account

given the low interest rate, whats your main reason for wanting the usd account?

I'd guess to avoid the currency charges and transfer charges.
Unless it was a reasonable capital amount, the loss of interest wouldn't make much difference and avoiding the charges, you might be better off.
