Anybody got any exeperience of opening a pharmacy. I assume lots and lots of loops to jump through.

I don't think that irish trained rule applies any longer.
I know a friend who is uk trained and opened a brand new shop recently.

had a check and found this supporting link [broken link removed]

You are right. You don't have to be a Pharmacist to own one, but a qualified Pharmacist must be on site at all times and must order stock etc (quite reasonable). The Pharmacist must be Irish trained and there doesn't seem to be an equivalency exam for foreign trained pharmacists. This smacks of a closed shop to me as many Irish people train in the UK and there doesn't seem to be any real medical reason why they couldn't run a pharmacy here.

I read the link posted by Resident and it gave me a laugh. One of my close relations is a Pharmacist and runs a shop in Dublin. There are all sorts of links between GP's and clinics and Pharmacies. Especially where specialist drugs are concerned. In one case I know of the Doctor who runs the clinic has a substantial share in the company that is the Irish distributor for the products he prescribes. The idea that Pharmacists are not milking these relationships, or that it is only a tiny percentage, is a joke.

I have to wonder about any enforcement of the irish trained pharmacist on site rule(is it still in place)(I think it was always a three year rule, ie Irish trained for first three years, then foreign trained could buy). I know my friend is uk trained and also the only pharmacist who works in the shop, apart from locum cover when he's on holiday.

I also know of where one family member is the GP and another the pharmacy beside, and the pharmacy does much better than its piers...

so yeah, I found part of that story funny too :))
though not for taxpayers, and sometimes perhaps not for patients either...
