Opening a NI or UK bank account

I am thinking of investing in the UK property market. To start getting a UK credit rating, I need to open a Northern Ireland or UK bank account. Does anyone know how to go about this. I bank with AIB here and rang their Newry branch (First Trust) but was told that they only open new bank accounts if a salary is being paid into it. Any ideas?
