opening a credit union account

hi, i am thinking of opening a credit union account to deposit a modest 10k, but am worried as to how safe they are. there has been little talk of CU as of late, and know that some CU are better than others (i live in the kilkenny area) Any info would be appreciated
 
Why are thinking of the credit union above any other type of deposit/investment?

What are your requirements for access etc? How long would you leave cash on deposit?

Have you checked if the CU have paid dividends in recent years?
 
Thinking of a CU as an alternative to banks.
Leaving deposite for 1-2 years
Only at initial stage of looking at CU so dont know about dividends.
