Depends on your requirements in terms of sound quality, whether you want primarily an MP3 player or an MP4 player, PC versus Mac support, sound quality, quality of PC interface (or if you just want drag & drop), features (do you need built-in FM or will an attachment do?), size/weight, user interface, ease of use, price, etc.

If you want some not completely impartial advice, I always recommend the Apple iPod - the original (more or less) and arguably still the best. Definitely the most popular. Some of the Creative options do trump them on features, however, and they are not the cheapest.
However, the various iPod models are always very classy, with excellent sound quality, reasonably good features, excellent ease of use.
