Hi
Was looking to find out ballpark figures for what you would expect to pay for online advertising. And is it possible to avoid going through the agencies?

Specifically I mean banner advertising.

Any examples at all would be a help.

Typical price for a good high quality website is €10 per thousend impressions (regardless of click through rate). You can deal directly with many similar websites (entertainment.ie, independent.ie, rte.ie etc.). However an agency might offer a better spread and design.

Other option is Google Ad's - your ad's will appear on sites and search results related to your product. Can typically cost from €0.10 to €1 per click on your advert (unless your a lawyer... in which case add a decimal or two!)

Just to illustrate my above examples better...

€1,000 might get you...

Advertise banner on independent, rte, entertainment.ie etc....

100,000 "impressions" and possibly 500 - 1,000 clicks

Advertise small ad format with Google Adwords....

125,000 "impressions" 3,000 - 5,000 clicks

Why have you singled out banner advertising? It is usually more applicable to "brand building" (e.g. Coke, Nissan etc.)... if you are a small/medium business or a niche operator, textual advertising with Google AdWords is probably your best bet.

PLEASE NOTE: I operate several small websites which are supported from Google AdSense advertising.
