On Job seekers benefit and now need Surgery

Hope someone can help me. I am on Job seekers benefit and I now need to have Surgery so I will be unable to look for work for some time. What do I need to do?

I presume go to your SW office and tell them this? Probably need to show them medical certs / info etc.

If you are unavailable for work, you can apply for illness benefit, which is PRSI-contribution based.

You can get a medical cert for illness benefit from your GP (or the hospital). The first cert includes the application form and the address where you send it to ( or it can be left into the SW office where you sign on if that's convenient for you).

Keep sending in certs every week until you're ready to sign on again.

Gipimann, can I ask you do I have to sign off from Job Seekers Benefit? & If I have to, do you know how long I will be without payment?
