On Illness Benefit but losing job so should I switch to Unemployment Benefit

Hi All

I am new to this posting thing so please excuse me. I am in the process of being made redundant, though am only in my current job a wet day. I am currently off sick and receiving illness benefit. I am wondering what I do next, do I stay on illness benefit until such time that I am fit to return to a new job or should I be letting the Social Welfare know I'm soon to be unemployed and apply for Unemployment Benefit then.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can only claim Jobseekers Benefit if you are fit for work and actively seeking employment. Your doctor will issue you will a final certificate when he feels you are again fit for work. If you are unemployed at that stage you can then make a claim for Jobseekers Benefit (if you have enough PRSI contributions) or Jobseekers Allowance (means tested) if you do not have enough contributions.
