I havnt been there, but on sunday, the Sinday Times was saying that Oman and Quatar are the new popular places to go in the middle east (instead of Dubai and Abu Dabi).
Supposedly the quality of the hotels is really high for moderate prices, and less tourism than in UAE.
You can go on desert and dune safaris, and also the scuba diving is reported to be excellent.
