NPPR payment, can I pay for this year only?

Hi,

My friend and myself own a rental property, we have not paid the nppr payment since it was introduced.

My friend said he cant afford to pay it yet, can I just pay for this year and then pay the rest next month?

You've a big bill so.. You realise that the penalties have been accumulating every month. If you owned and rented that house since '09 then the total due is 2160 euro.
But back to you actual question the answer is I'm not sure. I'd reckon you should call into your local county council and talk to them.. I'm sure it's not the first time they've come across it....

Pretty sure there was a recent newspaper article where a landlord owed €2,300 and was not allowed to part pay. I can't find the link, sorry.

Hi CKT,

I am in the same situation as you. I didn't pay the NPPR since it was introduced (not proud of this, please don't judge). This year I am in a better financial situation so wanted to ensure I complied with all necessary taxes and charges for the property I cannot live in.

This morning I was faced with a €2,160 bill and called the County Council to see if I could pay this off in installments. The answer was no, it must be paid in full. If it is not paid in full by Saturday I will have to pay €2,240 next month. There is a 'hardship case' which can be applied for through the dept of environment if I could not pay it in full I was told. In order to go down this route you have to have proof of bills in arrears etc.

So now I'm waiting for my bank to call me back to see if I am eligible for a loan so that I can pay this in full and not have to worry about it any longer. If they don't aprove the loan I don't know what I'll do.
 
thanks everyone, yes i am aware that it is a big bill, i dont see why they can't take part payment, they might find that a few more people would pay it (even thought we have to).

i made a quick call as well to the cc and they have no way to take part payment.....

I could lie on the website and state that i only have property this year??
 
You could ... but when you try to sell etc. it will come back to haunt you .... think of all the outstanding charges you'll owe then!

WHY not just login and pay for this year only. who is to know when you started to rent/obtain your 2nd property.

Dishonest advice I know but look at all our honest policians, builders bankers etc...

Go into website, pay for this year. how are the staff going to prove otherwise. THey have very little resources to check and even less staff.

From a once very honest person.

Because this is screwing the rest of us. If you don't pay the NPPR charge then tax returns are not accurate either so how much has the exchequer been done out of that the rest of us subsidise??

I speak as a landlord who paid NPPR but realised after 2 years that an interim year had been missed and we had a big bill to pay. That was accidental. People who didn't pay from the start are unlikely to be accidental IMO
 
It s the little man with the least resources that gets screwed - if you were really hard up and can prove so you should be ok.I was in a similar situation few years back with the revenue and was shown leniency due to hardship through no fault of my own.
 
No its not Ok and we are all being screwed anyway so why not add another one to the list!!!!

I was an honest person too and goodie goodie who paid all my bills - even paid the household charge.

But when 2 weeks ago my youngest was in tears because I cant affort the 55e for the summer camp. THen I see many of my dole dosser neighbours arranging holidays abroad and having no problem paying for the camps. I also see our ex-millionaire builders/plumbers/electricians neighbours back from the south of France and heading again for the 2nd holiday.

I see my brother who did 2 years in RTC many years ago and a few years in the bank and is promoted on 94,000e a year job in the bank...along with many many younger friends... no wage cuts there.

Im ranting because it beats me up and Im a begrudger, I never benefitted from the wonderful celitc tiger and Im not paying for them - no more. Im going to screw the system - avoiding as much government taxes as I can.

So go for it girl.... just pay for this year. I can assure you they have no way of checking out when you got the house etc. so do it for me...screw the system.
 
Serious question,is this the same as the "2nd home tax"?
I've only started hearing about NPPR over the last few weeks because of the ads on the radio,if you only own 1 property do you have to pay this charge?
 
Yes defo

Its Non Principal Private Residence Tax i.e. you may only own one house but if its not your primary residence then you have to pay the tax..............sad but very very true
 
Fair.....that has nothing got to do with it.......

For example if you have a house in Mullingar and you have to move to Dublin for work and rent there because you cant afford to commute ect...you still have to pay all these taxes/charges...and tomorrow is the last day for this year.......next week you will have to pay a fine....

At least the people who have moved away.......may a better life than some of us left behind to suffer and struggle.......which is what we are doing.......struggling...

Jaysus,didn't know that,thanks for clearing that up.
If someone was renting their home since March 2011 what would they owe now,would they be better off just paying for this year as others have suggested and hope for the best?
 
I genuinely didn't know about this charge,I find it very unfair that I will now have to pay a penalty for this.why wasn't I notified that I was liable for this payment when I registered my tennancy with the PRTB last year?
