Received a note in the letterbox this morning from ESB saying that "due to essential maintenance" our area will be without electricity next tuesday from 9am to 5pm. This is fierce annoying given that without electricity I have no internet nor landlines, and I work from home to boot !!!...not to mention no kettle . Oh well I will be spending my day in a nearby hotel that provides wireless broadband.
We frequently have no electricity days due to "major faults" which last from an hour or so to entire days, can never get any kind of compensation for spoiled food/eating out etc.
My suggestion is to have what we call the emergency box containing torches, candles, radio, an old style telephone that doesn't need electricity to work, oh and we even have a camping stove so we can at least make tea and soup! I know a couple of people who have generators too!.
( remind me again what year it is!!)
All corded landline handsets should be powered by the telephone network itself and not by your domestic electricity supply.an old style telephone that doesn't need electricity to work

I had one of these a short while back from 9am to 5pm. I wouldn't normally mind, but I had a 5 day old baby just out of hospital! Not an easy day at all. But we had had several power outages in the area, unplanned and often at night, which is much worse, so you can't complain if they have to turn the power off to fix a problem, can you?
