Received a note in the letterbox this morning from ESB saying that "due to essential maintenance" our area will be without electricity next tuesday from 9am to 5pm :( . This is fierce annoying given that without electricity I have no internet nor landlines, and I work from home to boot !!!...not to mention no kettle;) . Oh well I will be spending my day in a nearby hotel that provides wireless broadband.

We get these quite regularly, it's usually back by 4 - very annoying but at least they give notice, good excuse to go to a hotel anyway!

Indeed, at least they give notice, we have had no supply three times in the same amount of months with NO notice !! Total hours without electricity - about 10, why do we pay a "Standing Charge" ?

We frequently have no electricity days due to "major faults" which last from an hour or so to entire days, can never get any kind of compensation for spoiled food/eating out etc.

My suggestion is to have what we call the emergency box containing torches, candles, radio, an old style telephone that doesn't need electricity to work, oh and we even have a camping stove so we can at least make tea and soup! I know a couple of people who have generators too!.

( remind me again what year it is!!;))

I don't think that is a common experience, at least in my part of the woods. I can count one one hand the amount of time I was without leccy in the last 10 years.

Don't forget to have matches in your emergency box!

Personally I think every family should experience a no electricity day every so often (in a voluntary capacity, no telly, no pc, no lights... but what will we do... talk, tell ghost stories, play draughts/read by candlelight, cook food on the fire) After all, it is in living memory we had electrification in much of Ireland.

How are ESB supposed to upgrade the networks etc if they don't have a scheduled outage every now & then??

I had one of these a short while back from 9am to 5pm. I wouldn't normally mind, but I had a 5 day old baby just out of hospital! Not an easy day at all. But we had had several power outages in the area, unplanned and often at night, which is much worse, so you can't complain if they have to turn the power off to fix a problem, can you? :)

For the unplanned outages maybe you could ask who caused them?? Often its Contractors and/or builders digging up the road & hitting a major cable which is then reapired by a crew.

I acknowledge that it's inconvenient but maybe find out the facts first??
