notebook touchpad not working

we have a little compaq notebook. the touchpad on it seems to have died - just can't get the cursor to move at all. I have plugged in a mouse to it and we can use it but it kinda defeats the purpose of these little notebooks to have a cabled mouse hanging off it! Is there any way of checking whether the touchpad sensitivity has been turned off inadvertantly?

There's a little switch on the side of my present laptop that enables/disables the touchpad.

A previous laptop disabled it with a function key. There may be hope yet.
