Not happy with varifocals

I ordered new glasses through an Irish chain of opticians. When I first went in I chose a frame and the assistant took my old glasses to check to see if the prescription would suit the new frame. I wanted the edges to be thinned out and was assured that this could be done with the chosen frame.
I then went for the eyetest the following day and was told the frame I chose would not suit (rimless bottom). I was annoyed as I had brought along a friend to help choose the frame and now had to pick another frame. However I went ahead and chose a new frame with the help of the assistant optician and paid €600 euros and went to collect them today.

The glasses look very heavy at the rim. I had specifically asked this to be thinned down. They had used 1.6 high index lens and have agreed to try a higher one but with no guarantess they will look thinner at the rim.

My prescription is +4.5 and + 5
After paying €600 I feel sick
Any advise greatly appreciated!

Have you asked to speak to the manager and made an official complaint.

They may be able to do something with them. Not sure which company you are dealing with but when I went to Specsavers they were very helpful as I had to go back a few times as I found the varifocals very hard to adapt to.

Hi Suellan
Yes the manager has agreed to put a higher index lens in but with no guarantees becuase the assistant optician recommended the wrong style glasses.
If they come back the same though what are my options, can I request a refund.? It's not specsavers but won't mention the co here.
Thanks

I had the exact same problem and same prescription but no vairfocals yet! A few years back. The main optician/owner was not there when I want to get new glasses, so ended up with young stand in. I specify asked for thin lenses. When I got them, they were like milk bottle bottoms. I pointed this out to the assistant, who said they asked for the lenses to be thinned out, but the high index? thin lenses I wanted were expensive and I would not be able to afford them! WTF. I never graced the shop again, never wore the glasses, and never went to collect my PRSI refund! That was then, now I am a grumpy ******* who would have them in the small claims count before they could blink an eye....

Hi Towger
Yes, they gave me milk bottom glasses too! I rang again today and they told me they are replacing the lenses with 7.4 high index plastic at their expense but again no guarantee they will be thin. I told her I would wait to see the outcome but if I wasn't happy then I would request a refund.
So we'll wait and see how they turn out!
