Nokia Mobile: 'G' on screen, not receiving txts

Hi,
friend has a Nokia mobile and a capital 'G' in a square has appeared on the screen. As a result (we think) she is not receiving txts and her settings have altered. We have gone through all settings, turned the phone on and off but all to no avail. No vodafone shop in our area - has anyone any ideas / suggestions please.. thanks!
 
Yep - thanks guys, we figured its the internet connection but cant seem to remove it! No txts / calls coming through OR being sent either. Have examined internet options, connectivity etc but cant seem to 'disconnect' it so the phone actually works again. Oh technology!

Try Connectivity, Packet Data, Packet Data Connection.
Set it to 'When Needed' as opposed to 'Always Online'.
If I leave it at 'Always Online' I get a permanent G, at 'When Needed' the G only comes when I actually use the internet on the phone.
 
'When needed' was selected already but thanks for the suggestion.

I performed the very technical and tricky procedure of turning the phone off, removing battery and turning back on.

Problem sorted. Do not try this if you are not a trained Nokia technician... *oops*
