No refund on Broken Cola vending machine

Hi just want to see if this is legitimate

Was in a pizza take away in Stillorgan last night, ordered a pizza then saw a vending machine so stuck some money in it for a bottle of coke.

Upon putting €1 in, it swallowed the coin and didn't register as having put in anything - I complained to the guy at the counter and he said "oh yeah, it's broken" - no sign up on it anywhere and it was still plugged in.

I then asked for my money back which he refused as he said it was nothing to do with him or his shop. He told me to ring a number on the vending machine and get a refund that way.

Now while I understand that neither he nor the owner of the pizzeria own the machine - the fact that they knew it wasn't working and didn't notify customers or just unplug it makes me feel they should have refunded me my money (which they refused to do). I know it's only a quid and I must have little else to worry about but it really pi$$ed me off.

Was he right, or should he have refunded my money?

His actions mean I will never go back to that pizzeria, where if he had have been a little less confrontational and maybe just given me a quid as a goodwill gesture I would happily return in the future!

Fair play-write to the owners and tell them the same thing. I think it's poor form not to let people know the machine was out of order, regardless of whether or not it is 'their' problem.

I presume that the pizzaria owner must be making a cut from the takings of the vending machine? Why else would they allow the machine on their premises?

What was even better actually was that there was a guy waiting to order, who upon hearing what had gone on walked out with me in protest!

I thought that was superb and meant that while the pizzeria might be up €1, they'd just lost even more business from acting in the manner they did!

Consumer 1, Stillorgan Pizzeria 0!

I noticed a sign on a vending machine in an A&E recently telling customers that if they needed a the hospital was not responsible and you had to cobtact the opertor of the vending machine at the phone number on the sign. The sign was clearly positioned.

I think that there should be a mechanism on site to get a refund if you need it.

I will never go back to that pizzeria, ...........a goodwill gesture I would happily return in the future!

How long will that decision last? Hunger is the best sauce........Also a bit of a double standard there with a comment like that. Ah well....

I live close enough to Stillorgan but bypass "that" Pizzeria and drive to the Sandyford Industrial Estate to get my pizzas.

what double standard Irish Fire?

I merely said that if they had have acted in a decent, customer friendly manner rather than being obtuse and difficult I would have been happy to return. The fact that they were so rude about it means I will never go back there - there are plenty of pizzeria's around that I don't need to go there again either!

You are now back tracking on what you said. first you say:

I will never go back to that pizzeria, ...........a goodwill gesture I would happily return in the future!

When someone comments on what you say you back track and say:

I will never go back there

So...???

This is actually what he said without Irish Fire attempting to twist matters. Jareck's view seems eminently logical to me. Anyway is not the point of the thread that the pizzeria has foregone (potentially) hundreds of euro of business for the sake of a single euro. I was always told that goodwill was the true value of a business., seems to have been lost on this pizza spot...
