No paper bag at M&S Grocery

I note Marks & Sparks are refusing to give customers at grocery free paper bags and insist you must purchase reusable plastic/ cloth bags. Why do they bother having any at the Grocery counters then?

I note BBC's Watchdog wasn't too pleased with them previously for other issues- are they asleep at Baker St.?

None of the supermarkets will provide paper bags for groceries. They keep these bags there for people paying for clothes.
 
Why is that? Is it environmentally unfriendly or simply because their mark-up on food is less?
 
Yes of course booze bottle bags are free- i assume! But they have a selection of paper bags under the counter (all sizes and shapes)- so a lot of non grocery items must be purchased in the Grocery Departments!

I've often seen people buying items of clothing along with their groceries at the groceries checkouts and they get a paper bag for the former.

What relevance are these UK M&S furniture purchase consumer issues to your question about paper bags? :confused:
 
Well as it happens, had indeed purchased clothing and when the supervisor was summoned to the Grocery, she obliged with another paper bag!
 
There was talk that if they replaced plastic bags for groceries with paper bags, a paper bag levy would be introduced.
 
The paper bags aren't strong enough to hold groceries such as milk, pototoes and goods that are heavy, that's why you're advised to purchase a plastic bag, if you haven't brought your own. Indeed you can buy clothes at the grocery tills in M&S and the sales person will always ask the customer it they wish to have they're groceries put in the paper bag, along with the clothes.
 
Are M & S any different than other retailers on this? Do Dunnes, Tescos etc supply paper bags for groceries at no cost? In my experience, no.

As a previous poster pointed out, reference to the Watchdog show is hardly relevant. I saw that show and if I recall correctly, the % of complaints was miniscule - the only reason they were covered was because people expect them to be perfect and in this case they let down a tiny proportion of their customers. Any other company wouldn't have been mentioned in the circumstances.
 
A local Centra I use from time to time, offers a smaller version of the US paper grocery bags you see on tv. They're branded Centra but have no handles.

Can't you bring your own reusable bags?

I think paper bags shouldn't be used for groceries, otherwise we're going to end up with loads of paper waste.
 
You can't buy non-grocery items at Dunnes grocery, some people will let you but they're not supposed to. There are no paper bags at grocery tills in Dunnes. The paper bags are really weak anyway- why would you want them for groceries?
 
You can at the Dunnes Grocery in Charlestown...And they do have paper bags at the tills but these can only be used if you have bought drapery or homewares items.

Yep, the minister threatened to do that because paper bags create a lot of pollution during their manufacture.
 
I was recently in my local tesco purchasing two bottles of wine. To my amazement the girl said that they no longer have the policy of supplying paper bags for wine. I had to buy a plastic bag and put the two bottles in. When I got home the bottom had come away from one of the bottles as they had obviously hit off each other. I was disgusted but what was the alternative - buy two plastic bags? I didn't bring my bags with me like I normally do because I presumed I would get the paper bags.
