It's 2025. I still have to ring a number and speak to someone in accounts to pay over the phone for an A&E bill. Or I could post a cheque ( i guess there is an appointed person to drive to the bank and lodge the cheques) . Elon could fix this for us.

Very disappointing and annoying given the terrific job that's being done on Motortax.ie. No more trekking into county council offices and queueing, and no more cheques, cash, or Green Shield stamps needed for payment, no more hardcopy form filling. A couple of minutes online, ticking a few boxes to confirm existing details, receipt into the inbox, and physical tax disc delivered to home address in a single working day. A dream, a winner every time, it makes parting with my money almost painless.

If this part of the public services can operate so effectively and efficiently, what is stopping Mary Harney's Monster from working half as well?

Is this a record?

But what would all those people do then? I mean it's not as if they could be redeployed or, shock horror, be made redundant.

You're not allowed to point out that some of the things that Trump is doing may be good ideas (though probably resulting in badly implemented solutions).

The Public Sector Unions and the culture of apathy and mediocrity that is ubiquitous in so much of the State sector, you know, the real reasons why people die on trollies.

It'd be cheaper to go back to A&E in a chauffered stretch limo and pay in cash then it would be to pay your A&E bill if the likes of Musk got his grubby hands on it.

Yes, a bad fix is probably better than no fix but that doesn't mean we shouldn't aim for a good fix.
I have no expectation that the level of waste in the HSE is any less endemic than it is in the OPW but the scale is massively bigger.

There are a number of hospitals that accept online payments. I have no idea why not all but that perhaps may require some "joined up thinking"

Interesting that most of them are in the Dublin area, Perhaps the old regional Health Board mentality remains in some places

The old regional health board infrastructure is still in place, under the HSE infrastructure that was placed on top of it.

That's the challenge, services under the HSE are far from joined up. It's a jumble of disparate services run by a multitude of different organisations, all with their own financial systems.
