No claims bonus reduced with addition of learner driver

I’d be grateful for insights regarding renewal of car insurance where a learner permit holder is a named driver.

I’ve always had a full no-claims bonus, paying less than €300 euro to comprehensively drive a two litre engined car. I added my son (learner permit) for the last six months of my current policy at an additional cost of about €750.

My renewal for next year has come in at over €2000 taking account of what is now shown as just a one year no-claims bonus.

It would seem like I have lost my own multi-year bonus by dint of adding my son as a named driver.

Is this normal?

Get a quote for a new policy from your existing company.
Your no claims bonus carries to the new quote.
They are usually lower than a renewal quote.

Also get online quotes from other companies.
I have found Aviva and Zurich offer good rates for added learners.

Get the Zurich quote through the onebigswitch website for an extra discount.

There is no bonus for loyalty to motor insurance companies.

Seems way off my insurance was circa 450 with no claims and step back protection with Aviva it went up by 400 when I added 1st learner as a named driver and then up by another 50 with 2 learner permit holders on the policy. Definitely no changes to my no claims bonus that seems like an error.

Similar happened to my wife, last Jan added my son as a learner, extra 300 or do up till renewal date Aug, then renewal went up to 2k, from 400 before learner, phoned insurance comp and they said quote was correct, so went to AA and got new policy at renewal date with learner for corc €800, so 3/400 for additional driver, but same no claims bonus/discount as before.
Try other insurers,

Thanks for that.

Tried online with Allianz. Didn’t offer an online quote for just a one year NCB but no problem for the longer NCB I thought I should have.

Question really is whether the NCB should go back to 1 year because of the addition of another driver.

Be aware that some companies/brokers will not touch a leaner driver with les than 1 FULL years claim free history as a named driver.
BTW approx. 6/7 years ago I had 2 provisional drivers on my 1.6 diesel.
I paid 2.8 for the first year I added the second provisional.
2.2 in year 2 and 1.4 in year 3 when the 1st passed her test.

I put my son on mine got a quote for 1800 with 12 years no claims for my self but with getsetgo they put a tracker in the car to monitor everything braking speeding etc it went down to 600 for both of us which is very reasonable

Many thanks for all the replies.

My current company had me over a barrel mid-policy last year so they probably just kept it going.

By shopping around and clarifying my personal NCB, I’ve got a policy for a much more acceptable 600 euro.
