I have an old nissan micra 1996. Last night after parking it for a few minutes, came back put key in to start and the engine did not tick over. All the electrics are fine but it is just not going into start mode.

I called the AA. The guy said it was my ignition switch and because its coming up to christmas and i had to get home , he basicly hot wired the car for me. I can still drive it , using this method but i am anxious to get it fixed!

Does anybody how much this is likely to cost etc?

Don't know how big a job it is labour wise, but I'm pretty sure it's not an expensive part - around €40 - 50 maybe? Maybe budget for €150 in total - bit of a guess though...
