New York Hotels

Hi,
I am going to NY in December. I'd like to stay in a hotel in Manhattan because I have friends who live in the area. The prices of hotels seem astronomical in Manhattan. Would you know of any nice and not prohibitive hotel in the area? Or any hotel website that would offer discounted hotel accomodation in Manhattan?

Stayed here last new years.Small hotel just across the street from Macys -very central.
Its small, clean and central.Dont be put off by the bullett proof glass at reception.
