new york area info please

Hi I hope to be heading to New York in July for about two weeks, staying in Manhattan for a few days and was thinking maybe of heading out of the city to the coast for a more relaxing time. Would anyone have any recommendations preferably by public transport that may suit? Have a fairly tight budget so wont be splashing out on accommodation either! All ideas welcome thanks

Never used either but if anything like the public transport in Manhattan, it is easy to use and efficient

Depending on how much travel you are planning to do, consider getting a one/seven day travelcard which works out much cheaper than single fares

How about going to Fire Island, just for day? Take LIRR to Patchogue, Sayville, or Bayshore, then take ferry over. Beaches are very pretty. But staying there will be expensive in summer. It's about 2 hours total to get there, so you could make it a day trip (just check ferry schedule to coordinate times).

If you want to go to Hamptons, you could take LIRR out there, but hotels are super expensive in summer. Oh even better--take ferry to Sandy Hook, NJ. Quick day trip from lower Manhattan, and pretty. Google Sandy Hook, NJ for ferry info.
