Hello all,

I have a rental property.

The utilities are Bord Gais and ESB.

Utility bils are currently in my name and are posted to the rental property.

I have new tenants moving in.

I would like them to take on the utilities in their own name.

If I give them the ESB MPRN number and the Bord Gais GPRN number can they go ahead, read the meter and then set up account in their own names?

I would appreciate any advicde on the correct procedure.

Thank you very much.

Bang off an email to both companies asking them how to go about doing what you suggested.

Or give the companies the details of the new tenants. Just get the bills out of your name. If the Utility Providers require a Guarantor this is not your problem. And in a couple of weeks check back with the companies concerned to ensure that the Utility remains in the tenant's name.

If you leave it up to your tenants they might not do it, you will still be responsible for the bills.

I always tell tenants I will transfer the accounts, then ring Bord Gais and ESB with the meter readings and the new tenant’s name and previous address.

They will then issue a Final Bill for Gas and a Closing Account for ESB, to my home address.

The bills are then between the utility company and the new tenants.

When they leave, again take the meter readings and put back in my name until new tenants found.

Simply phone ESB 1850372372 with your a/c number, final meter reading plus name and phone number of new tenant.

Done and dusted. ESB will send you a final bill and will write to new people. You are of the hook.

I'm not sure how Bord Gais do it but it's probably similar.
