new payment claim - old work

I've just found out that my business partner never invoiced a company for work I did several years ago. I mentioned it to someone else and they said they thought there was a time limit beyond which you can't make a retrospective pay claim - or at least, they can refuse to pay. Can anyone tell me whether this is true, and if so, what the time limit is? Thanks.

Thanks bond-007. That's better than I'd hoped; The person I was speaking to before said three years. Anyone have any pointers on where this is written down (legislation?) in case I need it?
