Hi all,

I am in the early stages of setting up an online shop, wondering what are the regulatory requirements for such trade. Am fnding it really hard to track down advise in this area, any on line retailers who wish to give me a bit of advise on this and the other dos and don'ts of online business, i'd love to hear from you.

Regulations are pretty much the same as for offline businesses.

Their is an EU law on long distance selling (ie mail order/internet) http://ec.europa.eu/consumers/cons_int/safe_shop/dist_sell/index_en.htm. Any other general advice would depend on what kind of product/service you are selling and if you intend taking payments online.

Thanks for that Thunder99. Yeah I will be taking payments online and posting goods to customers. Hoping fuel charges won't cause An post quotes to rocket. Have been in touch with my local enterprise board, but to be honest, they haven't been great on advising on line retailers...

Apart from the legal side, whatever you do make sure the site is simple and with a search function that actually works and don't waste money on fancy flash intros!

Whatever you do, don't restrict yourself to the irish market.

Haven't done this myself, but I would see an ebay shop as an easy & relatively low risk path to setting up an online shop.
