New Grants for Attic insulating

Hi all
Sorry I know its just been announced the new home upgrades.
I had some companies our before Christmas to give me a price, I was not happy with any company as they wanted to do what they want not what I wanted.
I have decided to do it myself with a mate who is a builder this Saturday.
Does anyone know if I can get a grant. Its going to cost me €1,700 to put insulation boards down and floor.
Any advice very much appreciated.
 
Nobody knows because the new scheme was just announced as imminent but there's nothing in stone yet.

Is this scheme still going?

I haven't seen the fine details of the scheme yet, but it would be safe to assume it will follow the current model where DIY work does not qualify.

The use of approved installers makes it more expensive, but cuts down on the fraud.
 
They mentioned on Clare Byrne live that announcement would be today so not sure if is actually correct.

She also had a builder on speaking about this subject so you might be able to get it on the RTE Player. He did mention that it would be a lot harder to get installers after the introduction of this grant as they are scarce as it is.

Yes it is but I need to use an SEAI registered person. Doing what I want will cost me more. The companies I had out tried to treat me like I had no brain. I don't think they wanted the job as it would take longer to do .

There are scarce and only want an easy job. Probably so busy as the work they wanted to do would take a half day maybe shorter the way I am going to do it will take two of us a day maybe a little more. Its like in the recession getting work done was easy. One point to note all 3 companies told me not to go for the grant too much hassle and it would not save me money as they would have to charge me €250 to €300 for a BER.

Not get this i would take pictures before and after to show. Also no labour cost. I do know people will try anything but they would have to have proof. Even getting the Tax back would be a help.
 
I upgraded the level of insulation in our attic recently.
Centre was floored for storage.
Not a complex job but time consuming.
Didn't bother looking for quotes as cost of buying insulation was way less than the the potential grant.

Stage 1 remove all items currently stored.
Stage 2 remove flooring.
Stage 3 remove old insulation on sides.
Stage 4 put new 200mm insulation between joists at sides. Caution air vents in soffit.
Stage 5 relay old 100mm insulation across joists at the sides.
Stage 6 put new timber along centre to raise joists to 200mm.
Stage 7 put new 200mm insulation between joists.
Stage 8 relay flooring.
Stage 9 fix canopy hood over staire to allow for new height.
At all times taking care to protect electric wires and light fittings.

Time consuming? Yes.
Messy? Yes.

To be honest it took about 3 weeks taking my time as I was on my own and in no rush.

Attic insulation is easy to upgrade generally.
But it's not "5 minutes work"

I could easily fake up before and after pictures. That isn't proof, and as a tax payer I think it's good that there are measures to protect this scheme from abuse.

It sounds like you only want to do a very minor job, this scheme is not designed to meet such needs. The scheme is also aimed at helping people who don't have the skills to complete the works themselves. If you can, it's always going to be cheaper do a job yourself rather than pay someone to do it for you and that's the same across any trade or industry.

You should be wary of an installer telling you not to bother with the scheme other than in a small job where the overheads don't make sense. For larger jobs, it they are telling you not to bother with it it could indicate that they are not registered for one of a number of reasons (not large enough to put the effort in to register, not good enough to qualify through the inspection process, etc..)

Thanks BlackandBlue doing it Friday with insulation boards as dont want to prop up joists. Cheers

Op - don’t forget to avoid putting your foot in the wrong place,it can be costly.
