New car - get money off?

We are buying a new car from one of the big dealers in Dublin and thinking of asking if garage would take something off the price for us.

Is this generally advised or the done thing?

Go for it - some dealers of high end marques are sometimes more reluctant as they see theirs as a prestige brand - and therefore 'worth every penny'.

I would try by playing dealers off each other - get pricing for a similar priced - but cheaper car and feign more interest in that one. In my opinion it's always worth haggling.

1/. Ask price. You will be quoted the list price.

2/. Ask price for a straight sale. This is the cash price.

Another idea is to go for an ex-demo model.

You could get an 07 car with only a couple of 1000 km - and reasonably expect 3-4K off the list price.

the dealers probably think that if you are stupid enough to buy a new car, you will also pay full whack

Telling posters they are stupid contravenes the civility guidelines of AAM. It is OK to disagree with someone, but it is not acceptable to tell a poster they are stupid.

sorry got distracted.... yes, done thing...
We are entering the second half of the year, so the bulk of the 07 sales has been done. Hence, dealers are now more open to "get some business".
With no trade-in, try to get between 7% and 10% off (unless you want to buy a mini, then expect 0%), and/or try to get free extras that suits your needs, e.g. parking sensors in not already included.
