New car deposit to garage

I was wondering if anyone had this experience when purchasing a new car, my volkswagon garage are requiring E1,500 deposit when i am ordering my new motor which will then take 10/12 weeks to be delivered this is just a holding deposit they say, surely this is a bit steep i would consider E500 to be enough, anyone with similar experience on this? would appreciate opinions before tuesday 25th july. Thanks in advance

What does it matter (assuming it is refundable)? It doesn't affect the overall cost.
 
I paid a deposit of €200 last year for my Opel..but I was picking up the car the following week
 
I paid 1000 deposit on a new Audi A4, but they would have been happy to accept 500. Car will not be delivered for 10 weeks.
